Description

The 101 Mini Head from Quilter is a flexible guitar amplifier that provides a rich assortment of boutique-quality tones for home use, recording, and is powerful enough to use onstage. The high-impedance input accepts normal guitar cables, while the gain control ranges from clean to overdrive. The Tri-Q control blends three distinct voices – including scoop, normal, and lead – to produce a wealth of tone-shaping options. The voice selector offers five classic overall tonal signatures, while the hi-cut control progressively rounds off the overall high-frequency content of the signal.

The master control adjusts the overdrive threshold of the amplifier from 0 to 50W or more (depending on the voice setting), offering clean tones or thick overdrive. The effects loop provides a serial connection to “sweetener” effects, such as chorus, reverb, and delay. The effects send also doubles as a line output for connecting to mixers or recording interfaces. The headphone output provides private listening, as well as an alternate line-level output. Dual speaker jacks on the rear of the amplifier drive any normal speaker with a warm, musical response. Additionally, the amp will function properly with no speaker attached. The 101 Mini Head ships with a standard IEC power cord and a speaker cable.

Gain: Controls the amount of overdrive

Tri-Q: Variable tone knob for dialing in preset EQ curves

Midrange Scoop: Removes midrange frequencies for an uncluttered sound

Neutral: Flat frequency response

Bass Cut: Removes high frequencies to reduce harshness

Voice: Five-way switch to select five overall tonal personalities, applied before and after the overdrive section

Full Q: Baseline sound with no superimposed tone shaping. Overdrive is inspired by vintage British amplifiers using EL84 or EL34 tubes, with a smooth, controllable entry into mild breakup. Full Q uses the standard 50W labeled output

Tweed: Tone shaping is added after the overdrive to mellow out the highs and create a smaller, chestier bass response, inspired by the tone of early open-back amplifiers

Jazz: Input gain is reduced, and the clipping threshold is increased to produce more clean headroom without any added EQ voicing. The relaxed, neutral tone response is reminiscent of early amplifiers used by jazz guitarists. There’s still enough gain to get into overdrive and the output is increased to 100W

Surf: An overall scoop is added to the preamp EQ, inspired by the ton of ’60s era Fender blackface amps, and the peak output power is increased to 100W. The result is a big, clean sound with lots of body and chime, but will less midrange clutter

Lead: The preamp’s full gain is available for maximum overdrive. A bass-treble boost and midrange cut are applied after the overdrive stage for maximum incisiveness and penetration. This enhances the overdrive harmonics and produces musically louder tones without actually increasing the net power into the speaker

Hi-Cut: This control progresses from the amp’s natural full-range response on the left, to a mild treble reduction in the middle, and to a steep treble reduction with frequency peaking on the right

Master: Controls the overall loudness or power level of the amplifier, without changing the tone established by the other controls. The power scale is most accurate for the Full Q Voice setting, with other voice settings increasing or decreasing the power at certain frequencies

Effects Loop: Series connected send and return, which outputs a 1V signal for incorporating “sweeteners” such as chorus, delay, and reverb. Distortion and overdrive effects should be placed in-line, between the guitar and amplifier input

Headphone: Drives a standard set of headphones. It is recommended to set the master to below half, to prevent overloads and damage to the headphones

Speaker Outputs: Connect a 4 ohm speaker to the “4 ohm” output jack and an 8 or 16 ohm speaker to the “8 ohm” output jack. For two 8 ohm speakers, or any other mix of impedance, plug one speaker into each jack. The amplifier is not bothered by mismatched impedance
